Heather and I met at the end of a church fireside in February 2017. We had a mutual friend that introduced us. The conversation went pretty smoothly, but ended too quickly. It was a quick meeting and we wouldn't talk to or see each other for over a month. Luckily, I did not put the famous Derrick moves on Heather when we first met because she was dating another guy at the time. After a month or so I randomly decided to message Heather on Facebook to ask if she was attending another church fireside. In the time since our first meeting Heather and the other guy had broken up and I'm glad I messaged Heather because she wasn't planning to attend the fireside otherwise. After more messaging on Facebook for about a week, we came up with a plan for our first date. I planned to take her to the driving range and show off my amazing golf skills. But that fell through so we ended up going to frozen yogurt that evening instead. I stayed up way past my bedtime talking outside the yogurt shop. But the time flew by and I didn't even realize how late it was. I didn't want the night to end so I invited her over to watch a James Bond movie. Heather turned me down that night, but it was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
I had been planning a trip to Utah at the end of February so he could come meet some of my family and more importantly so we could attend one of the BYU men's volleyball games. Going to a game every year has been a tradition for me. In fact, shortly after we started dating last year I was talking about being in Utah last February and attending a volleyball game. He mentioned that he was at the same game and as I showed him a few of the pictures I took, he zoomed in and found his face in the background! Yes, we had taken a picture together before we had even met! Derrick made sure we got to Provo early so we could go to his cousin's house to spend some time with her. As soon as we got there they both disappeared and I was left to wonder where they went. Soon enough, they reemerged without an explanation. As we were leaving, his cousin mentioned that there might be a pretty sunset. I thought nothing of it. We still had some time before the game so Derrick suggested we take a drive up the mountains to look out over the city. We got part way up the mountain, but the road to the top was closed so we stopped in a parking lot. The sun was already down and it was getting pretty dark. No pretty sunset to enjoy. As soon as we got there, he jumped out of the car. I was surprised that he got out, but I figured I would follow him. We walked a short way, when he told me that his cousin got some presents for us. (Their mysterious disappearance was explained) Then he pulled out two BYU volleyball shirts with his last name printed on the back of both. While I was processing the shirts, He got down on one knee and told me how much he loved me and that he wanted us to get married and be teammates forever. I was surprised and ecstatic! Of course I would! We got back in the car and headed to the volleyball game and sat in the same place where we had taken our first picture together just over a year ago, but this time wearing team shirts.
