Their Story Begins

It’s funny how life has a way of bringing the right people together at the right time—sometimes all the way across the West Coast. Courtney and Ian met in Bremerton, Washington, of all places. Ian was stationed there on Navy orders, settling into the rhythm of military life in the Pacific Northwest. Courtney, meanwhile, was making a big leap of her own—relocating to Washington to attend Washington State University and start a new chapter. Both of them had arrived in the same state for entirely different reasons… yet somehow ended up on a path straight toward each other. What makes it even better is that they were both originally from Southern California. Two SoCal kids who grew up under the same sun, breathed the same ocean breeze, and probably sat in traffic on the same freeways—yet never crossed paths until life threw them nearly a thousand miles north. Small world, right? Or maybe just excellent cosmic timing. In this little corner of Washington, far from their hometowns, they found each other. A Navy guy and a newly minted Coug—two Californians discovering that home can sometimes be a person rather than a place. And that’s how it all began.

Their Adventures So Far

If you ask anyone who knows Courtney and Ian, they’ll tell you: they do nothing the easy way. Not meeting, not dating, not moving, not surviving adulthood—and definitely not ending up in Ridgecrest, California, of all places. But somehow every twist, challenge, and plot twist has only made them stronger (and honestly, a lot funnier). Their relationship has been a whirlwind from the start. First came the nine-month deployment—because why not kick things off with a little international separation and questionable Wi-Fi? They became experts at time zones, choppy video calls, and writing messages that started with “If this ever sends…” Then, just when they thought they couldn’t possibly be farther apart, the Navy said, “Watch this,” and stationed Ian clear across the country for another month. Meanwhile, Courtney was juggling school, life, and a schedule that made caffeine nervous. Eventually, Ian moved from Washington down to California, while Courtney stayed behind finishing her undergraduate degree—because what’s a strong relationship without a few thousand miles, academic deadlines, and a global pandemic sprinkled in? But finally—finally—they closed the distance and moved in together in Ridgecrest, CA. If you know Ridgecrest, you know this was a major test of love, patience, and the ability to create their own entertainment in a town where the main attraction is… the wind. In between all the zip codes, moves, and logistics, they packed in a lifetime of adventures. Tent camping that tested his patience with her (and the integrity of their air mattress). Trailer camping that sometimes felt like glamping and other times felt like they were auditioning for the latest episode of YouTube University Fix It skills. Boat rides full of laughter, sunburns, and “Slow down!” And of course, RZR rides and dirt bike days as a family — dust, dirt, adrenaline, and some of their happiest memories. Together, they navigated the milestones that define adulthood: degrees earned, career changes, moves completed, bills paid, vehicles fixed, and several “learning experiences” involving tools, YouTube tutorials, and maybe a call to a parent or two. And in 2023, they hit one of their biggest milestones yet: buying their first home together. A place filled with love, laughter, memories… and at least one drawer that will forever be the junk drawer. Through deployments, long distance, moves, chaos, and adventures that required both bravery and technological patience, their love never wavered. It grew. It deepened. It survived everything life threw at them—and somehow stayed fun, silly, and full of excitement along the way. A love that lasted through it all. A partnership that thrived through every challenge. And a story still very much in progress—hopefully with fewer moves and many more adventures.

When Love Asked for Forever

After seven years together, their relationship had woven itself into every part of their lives—road trips, inside jokes, shared routines, and a love that feels steady and familiar in the best way. So naturally, the question on everyone’s mind—especially hers—was when he would finally propose. What she didn’t know (or maybe refused to believe) was that he actually had plans. Real plans. Good ones. He imagined proposing somewhere meaningful—out in the desert where they had made some of their favorite memories. Ian pictured them surrounded by their closest family, maybe at sunset, the moment unfolding with perfect timing and just the right amount of drama. He wanted it to be something unforgettable, something worthy of the seven years that had brought them to this point. But reality had other ideas. Every time he tried to coordinate the perfect plan, something went wrong. Sports schedules conflicted. Family couldn’t make it. His beautifully imagined desert proposal kept slipping just out of reach, one foiled attempt at a time. Meanwhile, she was not sitting quietly by. She had waited—patiently, at first. Then… less patiently. Then not-so-subtly at all. She hinted. She joked. She reminded him of anniversaries and ring styles and timelines. And she even caught the bouquet at his best friend’s wedding! It wasn’t nagging… exactly. Just applying consistent, strategic pressure… or so she says. And eventually—it worked. One completely ordinary day, after yet another carefully laid proposal plan had disintegrated thanks to clashing schedules, he reached his breaking point. She happened to be in the garage, of all places—standing among storage bins, backpacks, and the usual half-finished projects. But after weeks of trying and years of gentle (and not-so-gentle) nudges, it was the final straw. He stopped, took a deep breath, and realized he didn’t need a perfect sunset or a coordinated gathering to ask the question he had been ready to ask for a long time. So right there in the garage—the furthest possible place from the Pinterest-worthy proposal he’d envisioned—he pulled out the ring he’d been trying so hard to present in the “right” moment. Her eyes widened and jaw dropped. He sighed, a little defeated, a little overwhelmed, and very in love. And then he said the words that ended seven years of anticipation: “Here. I love you. I give up. Will you marry me?” Courtney, of course, said yes instantly—no hesitation, no dramatic pause—just pure, joyful relief, some teary eyes, and plenty of laughter. And though none of his grand plans unfolded the way he hoped, the moment ended up being perfectly them: unplanned, authentic, and rooted in the life they'd already built together. In the end, the garage proposal wasn’t the backup plan. It became the real story—unexpected, imperfect, and absolutely unforgettable.
