Just outside the beautiful Laie, Hawaii Temple in the fall of 2016, Moia and her friends hoped to snap a photo together with the stunning scenery. Needing an impromptu photographer, Moia spotted a handsome gentleman across the gardens. What she assumed to be a one-time encounter with the willing cameraman named Derek, was actually the beginning of eternal journey together. After that small, but unforgettable (for Moia, at least) encounter, Derek went to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Massachusetts Boston Mission for two years, and Moia pursued her passion of studying psychology at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. Upon returning from his mission and in need of academic counseling, Derek walked into the school Academic Advising office hoping to schedule classes for the semester. Little did he know Moia was working there. After some pep talks from Moia’s co-workers, Derek was determined to ask Moia out. Luck was definitely on his side, because they also happened to attend the same church services. After sitting beside her at church one Sunday, Derek proceeded to ask Moia out for the following Friday. And given the special day planned for December 28, you can guess Moia’s reply.
