How We Met

October 2, 2016

FROM HAILEY'S PERSPECTIVE: I had plans to move back to Washington from California when Danielle, my best friend and maid of honor, told me about Derek, saying she thought we’d be a good match. Despite telling her I had no interest in getting into a relationship, Danielle went ahead and told Derek about me. He promptly followed me on Instagram, even before we’d met or spoken. On my first full day back in Washington, Danielle took me to Derek’s house, where he lived with several roommates. He was immediately glued to my side, charming me with his "life of the party" personality, quick wit, and sense of humor. As we talked, we discovered that the neighborhood I had just moved out of in California was the very one Derek had grown up in. It felt like one of those small-world, "it’s meant to be" moments. We became enamored with one another almost immediately, and the rest is history. Our wedding day is 8 years and 10 months in the making. Let’s celebrate accordingly!

Our Engagement

December 26, 2020

FROM DEREK'S PERSPECTIVE: Hailey and I flew into Las Vegas on Christmas Day. The next day started off with a little good luck — I won some money at the casino — and we spent the afternoon walking the Strip, just enjoying the day together. What Hailey didn’t know was that I had been carrying the ring in my pocket the entire time, waiting for the right moment. As we made our way to the Bellagio fountains, the song “Con Te Partirò (Por Ti Volaré)” began to play and the fountains lit up in sync with the music. With the water dancing behind us, I got down on one knee and asked Hailey to spend forever with me. For a moment, she was completely speechless — wide-eyed, hands over her mouth, trying to process what was happening. After a few stunned seconds, she said yes. For the rest of the night, she couldn’t stop staring at her ring — constantly holding out her hand and smiling, often accidentally running into other tourists in the process. We celebrated that evening with a decadent dinner and cocktails at Spago, enjoying the patio view overlooking the very fountains where we had just gotten engaged. As I look back on that moment, I feel so grateful for everything that led us here. I’m excited for what the future holds and can’t wait to celebrate our journey with all of you.
