How We Met

01.11.11

His version: I was invited by a friend of mine to a house party/pre-game at a house right around the corner from mine. My roommate and I figured, there will be girls and free booze so why not give it a chance? Within minutes of walking in, I was introduced to this stunning brunette in the kitchen and I could not get her out of my mind. As the night progressed, we parted ways and my friends and I went to the bar, knowing well that she was not 21 and there was no chance I would see her out. A couple hours passed and somehow, in the daze of the evening, I lost track of my buddies and just as I was about to call them to meet back up, I spotted her across the bar. How could it be? Turns out that the bar I went to was the only one where her fake ID worked. I made my way across the bar and, in my drunken stupor, shouted, "Can I get you a beer?". Amazingly, she said yes. A few beers and hours of engaging conversation later, I was hooked. She was perfect and I pretty much knew she was the one right away. Her version: One of my roomates at the time was turning 21 so we celebrated by throwing a pre-game before everyone went to the bar that was a part of growing up- Dirtbag's. It was also the one bar I couldn't get into because my fake ID was from a waitress that worked there. Anyway, the party neared the last hour and I was in the kitchen passing out cupcakes when I was introduced to a handsome stranger, Alex. He has a smile that can light up a room and I witnessed it for the first time then. Fast forward to the last minutes of the party after most of the cupcakes were smashed on our floor and the vodka was gone- we were heading out. I wasn't going to Dirtbag’s so I went to another bar, Gentle Ben's. I walked through the door and saw that cute guy I had met at the party an hour or so before. He convinced me to sit down and let him buy me a beer. Everything instantly clicked. We sat in that college bar in Tucson for hours and it was the night I found my best friend.

How He Asked

10.26.18

His version: It took me a while to figure out the exact plan, but I decided a few months before popping the question to do it at our favorite beach in San Diego. I planned a dinner at a great restaurant right down the road and told her "we're going out on Friday. I'm not telling you where but dress like it has $$$$ on Yelp". As we drove away from the house and towards the restaurant, I said "hey, we haven't been to the beach in a while, why don't we stop and watch the sunset?". As we walked towards the water, I took her into my arms and pulled out the ring box from my jacket pocket (how did she not notice?!). I got down on one knee, she said yes (thank goodness) and we left the beach to an amazing dinner with some of our closest friends. Her version: I would like to add that I had grilled Alex with my usual game of 100+ questions the week leading up to the engagement but he held up like a champion, as per usual. I definitely knew something was up when he changed into a blazer and jeans since he's normally in khaki shorts and a golf shirt. It was an overcast day in late October and no one else was at Ponto Beach that Friday to watch the sunset- which is very rare. When the sun was close to setting the clouds parted and it was just us, it was perfect and in true Alex fashion it was as if he had planned it for much longer than he did. Wouldn't have had it any other way.
