Our Story

July 4, 2023

Denise had traveled to Dallas to spend the Fourth of July with her friend Ana. For Joe, it was just another regular workday. Denise, along with Ana, Ryan, Fernanda, and Rocio, went to Irving to watch the fireworks. But once they arrived, Denise and Ryan were frustrated with the heavy traffic and the difficulty of finding parking. They suggested going for ice cream instead, but Ana wasn't having it. She was determined to see the fireworks, so they stuck it out and eventually made it to the viewing spot. Once they settled in with snacks, they waited eagerly for the fireworks to start. But when they finally did, the show only lasted about five minutes before suddenly stopping. Everyone started leaving, but Ana wouldn’t budge. She was convinced the show would restart. After a while, Denise & Ryan finally convinced Ana to leave. As they walked back to the car, just before getting to the parking structure, the fireworks began again. Ana stopped in her tracks and insisted they sit and watch. Little did Denise realize that right behind them, there was the BEAR (a wheeled SWAT vehicle designed for military and law enforcement use.) but what caught her eye instead was a handsome guy in a cop uniform. Denise pointed out the cop to Ana, who was surprised that Denise even noticed anyone. She quickly suggested they pretend to take a picture. The two of them ended up joining a group of kids who were asking for pictures with the BEAR and the cops. They snapped a photo, but Denise was too shy to make conversation with Joe. Ryan tried to strike up a chat, but all they could talk about was the BEAR. Eventually, they decided to leave, but they shared the picture with Rocio. Ana, however, couldn’t let it go. She swore she saw Joe giving Denise a look, and she was convinced there was something there. After they got to the car, Ana called Rocio and told her about Denise's interest in the cop. Rocio, ever the instigator, didn’t hesitate for a second. She grabbed Fernanda and rushed back to the spot where the fireworks had been. All the while, Denise and Ana were on the phone with Rocio, hearing her huff and puff as she made her way back. When Rocio arrived, the BEAR was still there, but Joe was nowhere to be found. Undeterred, she asked another cop where he was, and he pointed to one of two SUVs. Rocio walked up to one of them and knocked on the window. Joe rolled it down, clearly thinking, “Great, I don’t get to go home after a long day at work.” Rocio then showed him the picture and said, "Is this you?" He replied, “Yes.” She went on to explain that the girl in the photo, Denise, thought he was cute, that she was a hardworking Latina, and asked, "Are you available? Are you Catholic? Can she have your number?" Denise finally texted Joe on Monday, and the two started talking. For two months, they exchanged messages, calls and facetimes before finally going on their first date. Oh, and we should mention that Joe usually works up on rooftops as a sniper and rarely works on the ground. But somehow, fate brought this boy from Massachusetts and this girl from El Paso together.
