The Wedding Website of Brittany Decker and Jared Mattsson
Zion National Park is home to some of the most breathtaking hikes in the world, offering everything from stunning canyon overlooks to adventurous river treks. We’ll be planning a group hike, meeting at the main lodge at 8 AM on Thursday 5/15 to tackle either Scout’s Lookout or The Narrows. And Friday 8 AM meet to carpool and explore Bryce Canyon. If you'd rather explore on your own, you’ll need to head to the main entrance in Springdale and take the shuttle into the park, which makes it super easy to get dropped off at any trailhead! MUST HAVE To visit the national parks, you’ll need to purchase an entry pass. The Zion National Park entrance fee is $35 per vehicle for a 7-day pass. PRO TIP If you plan on visiting both Zion and Bryce Canyon, consider purchasing the America the Beautiful pass, which costs $80 and provides access to all national parks for a full year—great if you're planning on exploring multiple parks during your visit!
Scout Lookout

A group of us will hike to Scout’s Lookout, a somewhat strenuous but rewarding 4-mile round-trip trek with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. The trail begins at The Grotto shuttle stop, crossing a bridge over the Virgin River before ascending through Refrigerator Canyon. One of the most exciting sections is Walter’s Wiggles, a steep series of switchbacks that lead to the lookout, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking canyon views. I’ve done this hike with my mom—it’s definitely doable for non-elite hikers but still a good challenge! This is on the way to Angel's Landing--- but you need a permit for that much scarier part of the hike!

Angels Landing

If you have a permit, you can continue the final half-mile to Angels Landing, a highly exposed ridge with chains for support. Angels Landing is one of the most breathtaking yet notoriously dangerous hikes in the world, featuring a narrow, exposed ridge with sheer drop-offs and chain-assisted sections that test even the most adventurous hikers. I’ve done it a couple times—worth it if not afraid of heights! (If you haven't seen the video of Jared doing this hike-- it's a must watch!

The Narrows

The Narrows – One of Zion’s most iconic hikes, The Narrows takes you through the Virgin River, where you’ll wade, and sometimes swim, between towering canyon walls. It’s a unique and scenic adventure, with options to hike a short section or go many miles in! The further you go—the less people. So nice! Also a bucket- list hike. HIGHLY RECCOMMEND renting water gear (boots and a walking stick) for The Narrows hike, which can be easily done at a rental shop near the shuttle stop.

Emerald Pools – A family-friendly hike leading to a series of waterfalls and lush pools, with lower, middle, and upper sections to explore. The trail offers a refreshing break from Zion’s desert heat, with stunning views and shaded alcoves along the way.

Here are other great ways to explore Zion without hitting the trails: 1. Rent E-Bikes or Regular Bikes – Cruise through Zion Canyon Scenic Drive at your own pace, enjoying breathtaking views without the crowds. Rentals are available in Springdale, and biking lets you stop wherever you want for photos or a picnic. 2. Scenic Drive & Shuttle Tour – Hop on the Zion Canyon Shuttle and take in the park’s stunning scenery from the comfort of your seat. You can get off at different stops to explore viewpoints, visitor centers, or just soak in the views. 3. Relax by the Virgin River – Find a scenic spot along the Virgin River, where you can dip your feet, have a picnic, or just enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The Pa’rus Trail is a great paved pathway that follows the river and is perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride.

Bryce Canyon National Park

On Friday morning, we’ll head to Bryce Canyon, leaving the main lodge at 8 AM. It's about an hour from East Zion Resort. My favorite hike is a 2.9-mile loop from Sunset Point to Sunrise Point, combining Queen's Garden and Navajo Loop for amazing views, including a walk right near the iconic hoodoos! If you prefer, you can also explore by driving around and stopping at the park’s scenic lookouts. Also amazing!! Bryce is DEFINITELY worth seeing!!

Slot Canyons!

Zion and the surrounding area offer stunning slot canyons, some easily accessible by car and others more secluded. Near East Zion Resort, you’ll find hidden gems in Orderville, less crowded and perfect for a peaceful adventure. Shaun at the resort can point you in the right direction, or you can book a guided tour with ROAM Outdoors to explore the canyons. For a longer drive, Antelope Canyon is two hours away, but it’s more crowded and requires booking in advance—so I recommend checking out the lesser-known options for a quieter experience.

Food and Drink

One of my favorite spots is Zion Canyon Brew Pub in Springdale, with stunning views of the canyons—it's a great place to relax and take in the scenery. We’re planning to meet there Thursday evening for anyone who wants to join! (See updated time on schedule closer to event) Springdale is about a (30 mile) 45-50 minute drive from East Zion Resort, with a beautiful drive through* the park to get there. If you're looking for other options in Springdale, there are plenty* of places to eat. Orderville, just outside the park, has fewer options, but there are a few. I would also go to the grocery store and have food at your glamping stay as well! (There are kitchens!) Since Utah's alcohol laws can be a bit tricky, be sure to stop at a package store before getting close to the national park if you plan on drinking.
