We met sometime before high school on a late-night Skype call. Our friends knew each other from different schools, and we were third wheeling a little bit. Joe’s friend tried to impress Jade’s friend by spooning cool whip onto his body. It was kinda weird. The Skype call ended before we really talked to each other, but it primed us for a pretty funny realization when we met again in high school.
After meeting in middle school, we slowly became closer through classes in high school, going to the same summer camps, and through mutual friends. When it came time to go to college, we reluctantly said our goodbyes. We came back to Maine on Columbus Day weekend of our freshman year and went apple picking with some of our closest friends. We snuck away from the group and found ourselves sitting beside a lake, looking at the fall foliage, and talking for hours. It was then that we knew it could be something more than friendship.
We both have special memories at museums from early in our relationship, mostly visiting the museums in Amherst and Boston. So once we were both in New York, we’d both planned to explore museums around NYC together but hadn’t yet made our way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In August 2019, Joe booked us spots in a tour of the Met before it opened. The tour was so fun and even had an undercover photographer who took photos of us throughout the tour… At the end, Joe got down on one knee and popped the question!
