The Portage Glacier extended out to where the visitors center is when I was a kid. It has receded far back now but you can learn all about it here and even take a boat trip out to the glacier. A great combo with the Wildlife Conservation Center.
A bore tide is created when a tidal change is so great the resulting change creates a large wall of water. And one of the best places to see a bore tide is at Beluga Point, just south of Anchorage and on the drive to Girdwood. Turns out Saturday the 26th, Sunday the 27th and Monday the 28th in the evening will be prime bore tide viewing events. Check out this link for the exact times. Arrive at the highway pullout early to get a parking spot. Under NO circumstances are you to walk out onto the mudflats. This is a recipe for disaster. You are coming for our wedding, not a funeral!
Want to check out the bears in action? You won't want to miss Brooks Falls. You will NEVER get to interact and observe bears like this anywhere else in the world. This was one of the last remaining bucket list items for Don in Alaska and we accomplished it in 2024. We highly recommend taking a flight out of Homer for the quickest way to get there (and a little cheaper). https://baldmountainair.com/
The BEST halibut fishing in the world. If you time it right, you can even get some King salmon while you are there. (Kings can only be fished on certain days of the week in the ocean). Make sure you have your fishing license with you. Too many fishing charters to pick just one. Book early, they fill up fast. Also a lot of great AirBnB’s to choose from. Homer is a great jumping point for Brooks Falls to see grizzlies up close and personal. The flight is much shorter than Anchorage.
Looking for a different way to see the state? The Alaska Railroad is a great way for everyone to take in the scenery. Whether you are headed north to Denali and Fairbanks or south to Whittier or Seward, the Alaska Railroad can get you there in style! Make sure to check out their Summer travel packages.
Denali National Park is a couple hour drive north of Anchorage. Wildlife is abundant but remember you are part of the food chain! You will want to book your stay at one of the hotels there early as they book up quickly. In addition to a ride into the park by bus, there are great helicopter and rafting excursions.
The Arctic Cheese is my favorite burger anywhere. You’ll love seeing all the local pictures on the walls…and ceiling.
