JJ first laid eyes on Asha at the American University Library, where she worked. However, it wouldn't be until April 2016 at Metropolitan A.M.E. Church in Washington, D.C. that they would have their first conversation. During service, Asha and JJ locked eyes from a distance–thus prompting JJ to approach Asha afterwards. They instantly connected over politics, their alma mater (AU), and family. It wouldn't be until August 2016, when they met up for church again, that JJ would make his move. Intrigued, JJ treated Asha to dinner at a contemporary restaurant in DuPont Circle, and the rest is history!

JJ planned a beautiful vacation to Martha's Vineyard for some much needed rest and relaxation. To Asha's surprise, everyone knew that he was planning to propose! Prior to dinner plans at local favorite, L'Etoile, JJ had an important question to ask Asha at Menemsha Beach. Under a breathtaking sunset, JJ popped the question on the rocks in front of a neon orange sunset fading into the water. Asha was completely surprised! The couple walked back onshore ushered by an eruption of applause and cheers.
