Dustin and I met at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. While we had many classes throughout our four years together, we did not start hanging out and getting to know each other until our senior year. The two of us had class almost everyday together during our first semester of senior year. One night, Dustin, myself and a few other people were staying up late in the library writing papers and working on a group project. This study session later moved to The Pub and ended in a trip to McDonald's. While I didn't think much of this, Dustin claims that it was the first time he started to have a crush on me. One Saturday night right before second semester started, my friends and I went out to none other than Gin Rickey's. Dustin and I talked for a little bit, but then went our separate ways drinking and dancing with our friends. At the end of the night, we stood outside of Gin's waiting for the Jule bus to take us back to campus. The first bus was full, so my friends and I ended up having to wait for the second bus. Dustin waded through the crowd to get to me and the rest is history! We spent the next month hanging out with each other and talking. I did not know where this relationship was going, but Dustin made it clear that he did not know if he wanted to start anything since we were graduating soon and I was going to move back to Nebraska and he was going to stay in Iowa. One night, I was tired of listening to him about this narrative, gave him a few beers and told him we were dating. To my surprise, he did not run away, so I called it a win!
Due to COVID, Dustin and I had not been able to make it back to Dubuque to visit our friends for about 6 months. In early June, Dustin began saying that he wanted to spend the Fourth of July in Dubuque. The week of the Fourth of July finally came. Dustin had done a pretty good job of convincing me that he was not going to propose, but I still had my hopes up. Our plans almost got completely derailed, as a close friend of mine had to get tested for COVID. Had she tested positive, our Dubuque trip was off. I noticed Dustin was very cranky the whole week and seemed really stressed out because he really wanted to go to Dubuque. I told him that it wasn't the end of the world if we could not go. Turns out, that was not the case. The COVID test came back negative, so our trip was still on. My roommate, Emily, and I went to get our nails done the day before and went shopping for cute Fourth of July outfits. Then we left for Dubuque. The next day, we met about 10 of our friends for lunch at a restaurant along the River Walk in Dubuque. After lunch, I turned to one of my friends and asked if they wanted to get wine at a winery along the river. To my surprise, everyone followed and came with. While we were walking, I noticed Dustin was getting a little nervous and our friends were following, but a following further back. Dustin kept asking me if we wanted to go down to certain places along the river, but there were bugs everywhere and I said absolutely not. We finally got to the end of the sidewalk and Dustin was starting to panic. One of our friends with us said, "Lindsay, look at that unicorn!" As I turned to look, Dustin got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I of course said yes and spent the rest of the day celebrating with our friends and calling our family! We are very excited to have everyone together celebrating with us as we become husband and wife!
