Betty was a medical student in Lexington, KY and Dave was a urology resident in St. Louis, MO. They were introduced through a mutual friend, Lindsey. Dave and Betty met while she was on rotation at SIU Dermatology and visited him in St. Louis. He kept in touch, slowly convincing her that his surgical life was not that bad, and Betty ultimately matched to SIU for residency and joined Dave in the midwest.

They were in Los Angeles for the weekend and Dave planned a belated birthday dinner for Betty with their friends at Tar & Roses in Santa Monica. He correctly assumed what her birthday wish would be, and after the Chinese mango cake was brought out and the birthday song came to an end, she closed her eyes -- to open them to Dave bending the knee! No wish has ever been more quickly granted.
