David Ly & Sarah Monahan Engagement
It all started with a mutual friend, Amanda. They already knew about each other, because Amanda had tried for years to introduce them, but neither of them were ready at the time. It began with little mentions here and there, one "you should meet my friend", and twice a "you guys would love each other." There was a plan to finally meet each other during what would be a friend's trip to Iceland, but COVID happened, and that trip was "cancelled" - until it wasn't. Time went on, they had added each other on Facebook and IG, but went on their separate ways, until fate decided to bring them back together once again - and this time, it was forever. Unfortunately, David's father had passed away on March 20th, 2021 and on May 5th of the same year, Sarah decided to message David to see how he was doing after his loss. It was a random Wednesday night, and they continued to talk until 2am - not just this night, but most nights.... through texts and Facebook Messenger. It took months of texting for David to eventually build up the courage to talk to Sarah on the phone. He told her he had a strong Asian accent, that she wouldn't like him - but all of that couldn't be further from the truth. He was nervous, because he really liked her. One night, David was very drunk, and decided to call her. He didn't have an Asian accent. The phone calls eventually, and finally, led to their first video call together. David was in Morro Bay, CA traveling for work, and Sarah was at home after work. From then on, it went from daily texts, to daily phone calls, to daily video calls - and eventually falling asleep together on video calls, every single night. They finally decided it was time to meet each other for the first time in person in Asheville, NC for a weekend together in September 2021. Asheville holds a special place in David's heart, and he wanted to meet Sarah in a place that was magical to him - a place that not only inspires adventure, but heals the mind and the heart - and it just so happens, that Sarah had always wanted to go there. This is where the fun begins. David had arrived a few hours before Sarah, and thus, met her at the airport when she arrived. They met, embraced for the first time ever, but Sarah had to still wait for her checked bag. The funny thing is, she didn't remember what her checked bag looked like. They had a reservation made for Tupelo Honey, one of their favorite brunch restaurants, so that had to be delayed - by over an hour. They waited... and waited... bags circling the checked bag carousel, moments of confusion, panic and anxiety. Sarah was too hesitant to check the tags on any of the bags, then David, frustrated, finally said "just check the tag.".... turns out her bag was right in front of them... the entire time. The couple to the right of them laughed; the couple to the left of them laughed; everybody laughed. The weekend finally began, and this trip set the tone for what their lives would be like together. They continued to grow their relationship and found they have a mutual love for music, food, and adventure. They knew early on that this love would be forever, and though not always easy, continued on with a long distance relationship that would last 3 years. With frequent trips between FL and PA, and various trips around the world-they decided to plant roots in PA and started focusing on their future together even more. That Iceland trip wasn't cancelled anymore. They finally planned their long awaited trip to Iceland in September 2024 after buying their first home together in Meadville, PA. David asked Sarah to marry him at Skogafoss waterfall - typically filled with tourist, but was completely empty by chance for this special moment. That brings us together to where we are today. This is no longer just a story of David and Sarah, but a story that involves all of you whom have shaped their lives in one way or another and they would not be who they are today without your love and support.
