Our relationship is a union of two cultures, one ancient and one modern. A civil ceremony in Seattle joined us under modern American law over seven years ago, so we have been wearing wedding rings for a long time. But this has only completed half of the story. A religious ceremony, before witnesses of family and friends, is required for a marriage to be valid under the laws of ancient Burmese Buddhist cultural tradition.
