Chandler and David met while doing a hill repeat workout (sounds fun, right??) with the Raleigh Trail Runners, a local running group. David had been a member for quite some time, and Chandler has just joined recently (this was her second meet-up). They saw each other a few more times at different meet-ups, but David always seemed to ignore Chandler (at least that's what she thought), so she didn't think he was interested. David then messaged her though the Meet-Up App to inquire about her membership in a different running club. After that, they continued to message each other and meet up to run on their own, without the group. However, Chandler was unsure as to whether or not these runs we run-dates or David just wanted someone to accompany him on his runs. It wasn't until David said "You know, I do things other than run. Like watch movies and eat food" that Chandler realized "Ok, this guy does like me and isn't just using me for my athleticism!" They have since gone on many adventures, from hiking Mount Mitchell and the Grand Canyon (Grayson Highlands was our first hike together!), to building a chicken coop from scratch and adopting chickens. And their adventure has just begun.
For the past few years, Chandler and David have taken a trip for Chandler's birthday (September 5) since her birthday always falls around Labor Day. For their 2017 trip, they decided to hike Crabtree Falls and Grandfather Mountain. David had already given Chandler a birthday gift (a sewing machine) the day before they left for their trip, so she wasn't expecting anything else. While hiking at Crabtree Falls, David suggested they go sit on some rocks closer to the river that feeds the falls; Chandler agreed. While sitting, David pulled out a wrapped box and said "Here's another present." Chandler said "What?? You brought this with you the whole way? Why??". As she began to open it, a butterfly flew up and landed on her leg and she, of course, had to take out her phone and snap a quick picture. Little did she know what was coming next. After the butterfly departed (and, to David, what seemed like an eternity), she unwrapped the box to find a Witherington Run Club shirt, similar to the one she made him for his birthday a year earlier. But it said Witherington Run Club, her last name is Wright... And then David said "It goes with this.", pulled out a ring box, and opened it. Chandler said "What's that for??" (she knew what it was for), and David said "Will you marry me?". Of course, Chandler said yes! They finished their hike, shared the news with friends and family, and climbed Grandfather Mountain the next day, shiny new ring in tow.
