On Friday, August 25th, 2017, David and Kelley's story began in Waikiki, Hawaii. David was there on vacation with friends and Kelley was there on business. As fate would have it, they both decided to go for a 'sunset surf' that Friday afternoon. Within minutes of grabbing a board and paddling out, Kelley paddled past David attempting to catch a wave. She missed and was a little embarrassed (she did notice he was pretty cute) so she made a point to paddle back around to redeem herself. When she got back around to David, she laughed and said to him: "When you miss a wave, it's kinda like being a dolphin!" Almost immediately, another wave came and she and David both paddled for the wave. Kelley looked up and saw David had already caught the wave and was standing up on his board! He glanced back at her and screamed: "Come on Dolphin!!" At that moment Kelley also caught the wave and stood up and they rode next to one another on the wave for a total of 216 yards... it broke four time as it headed to shore! As the wave came to an end, Kelley and David jumped off their boards and looked at each other and laughed and paddled back out to catch more waves. They surfed for a couple of more hours, catching wave after wave, talking and laughing and getting to know one another. David's friend Shawn was also in the water, but stayed at an appropriate distance while the magic was happening. Shawn uktimately played a key role in David and Kelley's story when the time had come to leave the water, David asked for Kelley's number but obviously didn’t have a pen! Shawn was responsible for remembering the first three digits of her number, and David was responsible for the other seven. All numbers were remembered in the correct order, and the rest is history! (Special thanks to Shawn Hoke!!)
David and Kelley met up that evening at the Royal Hawaiin Hotel. They had dinner with one of Kelley's friends, then had a drink and walked on the beach. They talked for hours, looked at the stars, and David walked Kelley back to her hotel (turns out they were staying less than a block from one another the entire week!) Before they parted ways for the night, David gave Kelley a hug and they made plans to meet up and surf the next morning. Before leaving, instead of Kelley giving David a kiss, she gave him a high five (David later recalled he wasn't sure if there would be another day together after getting a high-five instead of a kiss 🤣.) The next morning they met up and spent the entire day together before David headed back to Denver. They both felt they had met someone special, but decided to take time to get to know each another. They talked on the phone almost every night, and met up in San Clemente, CA six weeeks later. After seeing one another again in person, they both decided to see where this would go... and just over a year later in San Clemente, CA, David proposed while they were surfing in the ocean, and the rest is history!
