JOHN: We met in the Fall of 1998. I was a Freshman at Rider. DAVID: I was a Senior at Rider. JOHN: I was 18, I looked about 12. DAVID: I was 26. JOHN: He looked about 26. DAVID: We were at a Rider F.L.A.G. meeting. JOHN: "Friends of Lesbians And Gays." We kept smiling at each other across the room, but never speaking. DAVID: Then I saw him again at a lecture. He kept turning around in his seat to look at me. Couldn't keep his eyes off me. JOHN: Every time I turned around in my seat he was staring at me. DAVID: Finally, I figured I had nothing to lose, so I sent him an email. JOHN: He sent me an email. All it said was, "Hi." DAVID: He responded by asking me to do him a favor: come with him to a concert so he didn't have to go alone. JOHN: We went on one date. My first date! He was so quiet. He barely spoke. DAVID: We drove an hour and a half in his shit-box blue car, he talked the entire time, non-stop, I couldn't get one word in! But he did sing me Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas! That, I'll never forget. JOHN: At the end of the date, I dropped him back off on campus and RAN back to my dorm! DAVID: He literally got out of the car and walked away, saying, "Later!" JOHN: I never saw him again. DAVID: I graduated that month. It was 1998, we had no cell phones, no social media... no internet, really! JOHN: 11 years later, Christmas Eve of 2009, his name popped up on my people-you-may-know on Facebook! He looked exactly as I remembered! DAVID: He sent me a message. I still have it. JOHN: We met for dinner in Princeton the day after New Year's. It was snowing. I got lost on my way to the restaurant. DAVID: He was late. He burst into the restaurant like a tornado with a runny nose. JOHN: I did not remember him being THAT handsome! I was intimidated. DAVID: This time, we both talked. JOHN: We talked for hours. It was like we already knew we were supposed to be together. DAVID: We've been together ever since. JOHN: 9 years.
