Question

Do I need a passport to travel to Ireland as a US citizen?

Answer

You must have a valid passport to travel to Ireland. There is no minimum passport validity requirement for US Citizens entering Ireland (i.e., there is no 6-month rule). If you plan to travel to any other countries before/after the wedding, be sure to research passport requirements for each country.

Question

Do I need a Visa to travel to Ireland/Northern Ireland as a US Citizen?

Answer

The Island of Ireland itself consists of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is a region that is considered to be part of the UK. Therefore, American visitors must obtain a ‘UK’ ETA when intending to travel to Northern Ireland whist visiting the Island of Ireland. The UK Electronic Travel Authorization (UK ETA) costs £10 (roughly $13). NOTE: The price for the UK ETA is increasing to £16 on 9 April. The best way to apply is through the UK ETA app, which can be downloaded from the Google Play or Apple App Store on your phone. **Be aware that there are multiple scam websites out there, so please make sure you are only applying through the UK ETA app, which is a UK government app.** US Citizens do not need to obtain a Visa to visit the Republic of Ireland, and can enter the Republic of Ireland for tourism stays of up to 90 days.

Question

Should I fly into Dublin or Belfast from the United States?

Answer

There are many airlines that more frequently fly into Dublin airport from the United States, and flights to Dublin can sometimes be *significantly* less expensive. IMPORTANT : Don't forget that flights from the US to Ireland arrive the next day (Ireland is +6 hour time difference from CST). If you fly out of the US on the 19th, you'll miss the wedding!
