It was simple & unexpected. We both were at points in our lives that we weren’t looking for anything other than friendship, but somewhere along the way we knew it was more than that. What started with texts just to fill spare time, video games on the couch with a pizza, and adventuring around the city turned into having keys to his apartment & spending more time there than I did my own home. We were best friends and though lines were never blurred or crossed, he became someone I knew I couldn’t live without. So, we said “why not?” and gave what we “weren’t looking for” a shot. It was natural, easy, and nothing like either of us had experienced before. I remember like it was yesterday, our first “I love you.” We both were so hesitant to mess up such a good thing with those three words. Looking back, it’s rather funny how scared we where that if we admitted we were in love that it would change our dynamic. Our friendship alone had built a foundation that was stronger than any storm we’d ever face. There was no denying he was my person and I was his - no matter how hard we tried to avoid it. Four years, two dogs and a beautiful daughter later friendship turned into a family!
I’ve always been very big on celebrations, holidays, and birthdays. Long before becoming a mom myself. Matt unfortunately lost his mom before I got the chance to meet her, but every year I make sure he celebrates her birthday in a fun way, keeping the day as happy as possible. After all, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have him and that alone is worth celebrating to me. Just like every year we planned a fun trip and being that we had our daughter at this point we opted on the zoo. I remember on the way there I said I love you and his nerves had him so jumbled that when I asked, “forever?” He responded with, “and a day less.” We walked the entire zoo and finally went into the aquarium. He kept his composure so well, but when we got to the penguins he wouldn’t leave. He knew if he ever proposed if people were around I would say no. I’m not big on being the center of everyone’s attention, but I wouldn’t stop talking to another family that was there. Eventually, he had no choice but to continue through the aquarium. As we were walking down the ramp past some smaller exhibits, he stopped and pulled me into one of them. When he started to ask I couldn’t believe it so much so I stopped him just to ask if he was serious, and he was. He dropped down to one knee and there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to spend forever with my best friend.
