Our Love StoryOur Love Story

The Beginning Dauhrzell (Darcell) and Ronnie’s love story began in the most unexpected place—an elevator at Washington Hospital Center in 1972. From the very first moment, Darcell was struck by Ronnie’s kind and mannerable nature, while Ronnie was captivated by Darcell’s smile and conversation. Their first date took them to Haines Point, followed by a second date at Marshall Hall, a popular amusement park in Maryland. In those early days, Ronnie would drive to Newton Street to pick up Darcell for their outings, always mindful of Uncle Buck’s strict curfew. Uncle Buck made his expectations clear, even going so far as to pull back the living room curtain and display his shotgun as a not-so-subtle reminder of his watchful eye. As their relationship deepened, Ronnie realized they shared the same values, and Darcell found in him a great companion. After three years of dating, Darcell’s faith led her to a pivotal moment. She told Ronnie that their relationship needed to move forward with commitment or she would return to her mother’s home. Taking her words to heart, Ronnie proposed in a quiet back room at his parents’ home on North Capitol Street. It was a simple yet heartfelt beginning to a lifetime of love. The Wedding & Early Years On August 30, 1975, Darcell and Ronnie married in an intimate ceremony at Ronnie’s parents’ home, officiated by Elder Samuel Cox. Though they couldn’t afford a formal wedding, the generosity of Mom Dugger and Aunt Gerald made the day possible. Their first place together was a modest apartment on Minnesota Avenue, in Washington, D.C. They didn’t have much, but they had each other—and their faith, which would carry them through every challenge. Within a year and a half, their family began to grow with the birth of their son, Carlton, followed by Marlow the next year. The early years were filled with love, hard work, and sacrifice. Darcell took on various jobs, working downtown as an elevator operator at Raleigh Haberdasher's clothing store and later caring for children at Peace Baptist Church’s daycare. Ronnie worked tirelessly, juggling two jobs—one at the Navy Yard doing landscaping and another performing facility work at Peace Baptist. Despite financial struggles, they leaned on each other, pooling their resources and abilities to make ends meet. Building a Life Together Through the years, Darcell and Ronnie built not just a family but a legacy of love, faith, and service. They celebrated many milestones together, from the births of their sons, to their lifelong dedication to serving God and their community. Darcell’s nurturing spirit led her to establish an in-home daycare service, where she looked after neighborhood children, while Ronnie continued working hard to provide for their family. Prayer was a cornerstone of their home, and they instilled in their family the importance of faith and togetherness. Holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries were cherished moments filled with laughter, gratitude, and the presence of loved ones. Although they regularly visited their hometowns of Waverly, Virginia, and Camden, New Jersey, their community was their world, and they found joy in serving those around them. The Secret to 50 Years of Love Five decades together taught them that lasting love requires understanding, patience, and steadfast devotion. Faith has been their anchor, and prayer their foundation. Their advice to younger couples: "A family that prays together stays together. There is no perfect marriage. You don’t change people like you change clothes." Looking Back & Celebrating As they embrace this new chapter, they are grateful for the blessings they once had to carefully budget for. While they look forward to the future, one thing remains unchanged—Jesus is at the center of their journey. Every step forward is taken with His guidance, ensuring their love continues to shine as a testament to faith, perseverance, and devotion.
