Question

Traditonal Thai Ceremony

Answer

This ceremony starts promptly at 9:09. The number 9 is considered very lucky in Thai culture, so 9:09 is an auspicious time for the couple to wed. Thai wedding ceremony is based upon symbolism and cultural traditions. Though Buddhist monks will be present, it is essentially a non-religious ceremony. The monks’ blessings are believed to eliminate all the sorrows and encourage the couple to maintain a long, healthy relationship. The monks will also pray and bless water to make holy water which will be used later in the ceremony. The couple will make merit by offering the monks food. This is also an important part of the wedding because it is believed that when the couple holds a rice ladle together, the person whose hand is placed above the other’s will have the upper hand in the relationship, and, usually, it will be the bride! The main event of the wedding ceremony, called "Rod nam sang" (water blessing). In this traditional Thai blessing, a simple white cotton thread is looped in circles and placed on the heads of the bride and groom, to symbolize them becoming one. Bride and groom are sitting and are held in a "wai" (Thai symbol of respect). This is where the guests take action by pouring holy water out of a conch shell on the couple’s hands while giving them blessings. Water symbolizes the cleaning process and signifies purity, therefore, the marriage will start afresh with all that is good and pure. This will be followed by a buffet lunch of tradtional Thai and Lao cuisine.
