No! Puerto Rico is a US territory.
Vieques is a small rural island with friendly locals, beautiful untouched beaches and delicious local cuisine. If you order seafood, you are likely eating something caught that day. You'll see wild horses and dogs, but in reality they aren't as wild as you may think - the locals keep them fed. The roads aren't well paved and you won't find any chain restaurants or large supermarkets, but exploring the local colmados and farmers markets is part of the charm. We have also never once been disappointed by any of the local food trucks found in various random locations throughout the island - be sure to get pastelitos (empanadas) and pinchos (meat skewers) whenever you get the chance. You'll run into a surprising amount of Americans from the States that have relocated to Vieques.
Because you will either be traveling by a smaller plane or by ferry to get to Vieques, we recommend attempting your best to pack light. Must-haves include sunscreen (reef-safe if you plan on snorkeling), aloe lotion, sunglasses, comfortable sandals and flip-flops, casual clothes, bathing suits, an outfit for the rehearsal beach party and the wedding. Vieques is a very laid back island, so please wear whatever makes you comfortable! Bathing suits with cover-ups, t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops are perfectly acceptable day and night. Check with your accommodations to see if they provide items such as beach chairs, coolers, and beach towels (they almost always do!) Also, it never hurts to have a little cash on hand for tipping.
The easiest way to get to Vieques is by plane from San Juan (SJU). However, you will save money by making the trip to Ceiba and either taking a plane or ferry from there. If you decide to travel to Ceiba, you will pass through El Yunque National Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. We would recommend padding a little extra time to explore the beautiful rainforest on your way down!
Once you arrive in Vieques, you will need a vehicle to get around. All guests will need to reserve either a golf cart or SUV to use while on the island. PLEASE CALL TO RESERVE YOUR RENTAL VEHICLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE as there is a limited amount on the island. We recommend calling Vieques Car Rental (787-412-8540) and reference the Mecca Wedding, as we have held 30 vehicles from this company. You can also call AVIS (787-397-2533) and Maritza's Car Rental (787-751-0078). Many of the week's events will take place in Esperanza located on the south side of the island. "The Malecon" is an area in Esperanza filled with beachside restaurants, bars and lodging. This area has plenty to do and is very walkable!
While we absolutely love and adore each and every one of your kiddos, this is an adult-only occasion.
