Danielle: In San Antonio we went Go Kart racing, which sounds like a great no pressure first date, right? Well, once we arrived, we were shown an intense safety video and demonstration… this, coupled with the other experienced patrons was a little intimidating. Despite my quietly kept fears I resolved to play it cool and try my best. As soon as we were on the track the other racers were lapping us constantly, but I didn’t feel too bad because I seemed to be at the same level as Nick (which was really my main goal – to not completely suck). At some point the other customers were done and it was just Nick and I racing, and this where things really got fun. The entire time Nick was ahead of me and I was on his tail just trying my best to pass him, until finally I saw my opening and took it. I squeezed through a very questionable space and managed to pass him on a turn. There were only a few more laps until the race was over so now all I had to do was keep the lead. For the last few laps I just made sure to keep very tight lines and low and behold I won! Nick still says to this day that he didn’t let me win, and that is good enough for me.
Nick: As a lot of you know, I’m a very indecisive person and take forever to make even the simplest decisions. Asking Danielle to marry me was not a decision I was unsure of. I knew I wanted to marry her very early on. What I was indecisive on, however, was how I was going to propose. I finally came up with a perfectly unique and memorable experience. I was going to propose at an escape room! I just needed some accomplices to help me keep Danielle unsuspecting, so I asked Danielle's brother and sister-in-law, Sean and Katie. The escape room had a “Russian Spy” theme and at the end there was a safe that contained the true identity of the spy on a dossier. That’s where I would put a replacement dossier that had a picture of us and contained information about our relationship. Danielle: Well it almost goes without saying that despite being together for over five years at the time, I was still clueless; both leading up to the proposal and during it. Now as many of you know, I love puzzles, and I love being right, so an escape room could have gone really well or really poorly. Luckily for us it went well, but that was largely to do with the help of an employee, which after the fact I now realize was because she needed us to get to the end so that Nick could actually propose. As we approached the end everyone insists that I open the safe, which was one of those combination locks, and I somehow manage to mess it up. So, with the help of my brother, we get the safe open and inside is a dossier. Now, the whole goal was to figure out the identity of the Russian spy and escape. So, naturally, when I see my and Nick’s picture and information on the dossier my first thought is … “Wow, we are the Russian spies!” … shortly followed by… “This company is really elaborate…” It was at about that time that I realized Nick was on his knee with a ring and the rest of the story continues in Italy.
