Chapter One

May 18th, 2024

Once upon a time, two weary hearts wandered through seasons of heartbreak. Hayden had endured cruel loves filled with betrayal, theft, and pain, and after years of disappointment, he chose the quiet comfort of life with his loyal dogs, Akira and sweet Ripley and keeping mostly to himself. Danielle had her own difficult past with love too. After years of unhealthy relationships, she had grown more comfortable on her own, dating here and there but never expecting anything serious to come from it. But as all fairytales go, their story began with a little magic woven by friends. One evening, Emma and Jason secretly arranged a blind date between the two strangers. Danielle believed she was simply meeting Emma’s friends for drinks and a little axe throwing, while Hayden remained at home in Ohio, unaware that fate was already intervening. As Danielle and Emma prepared for the evening, Emma smiled knowingly and said, “You’re going to find your man tonight.” Danielle laughed and brushed it away. “Yeah right! I’m perfectly fine being alone.” And off she went, not realizing destiny was right around the corner. When Danielle and Emma arrived at On The Dunes to meet Jason and their friends, they quickly learned the plan had fallen apart. Hayden had been called into work, and with four long hours between Ohio and Michigan, he simply couldn’t make it in time. Danielle shrugged it off once she was told about the date and Hayden not being able to make it, believing perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. After a few drinks and a little axe throwing, Danielle’s curiosity suddenly sparked. Feeling confident, she marched up to Jason and asked to see a picture of this mysterious Hayden. The moment she saw him, her confidence melted into flustered laughter. “Okay wait… let me talk to this guy.” Without warning, Jason secretly FaceTimed Hayden. Danielle thought it was only a phone call until the screen lit up with his face. Startled but still feeling forward, the very first words out of her mouth were, “Hi umm… why wouldn’t you want to meet me!? I’m a really nice person!” Hayden simply smiled softly and said, “Hi, I’m Hayden.” And just like that, every bit of frustration vanished. She was smitten instantly, his smile and voice made everything that went wrong that night seem instantly better. They talked and laughed as though they had known each other forever. Before the night ended, Danielle gave Hayden her number, and they stayed awake talking long into the night beneath separate skies. The very next day, Emma and Danielle went to the beach, unaware that Emma and Jason were once again scheming behind the scenes. Determined not to miss his chance a second time, Hayden finished work early that morning and immediately made the four-hour drive to Michigan just to see her. While Danielle waded in the water with Emma, Jason quietly guided Hayden toward the shore. Hayden later confessed that the moment he saw Danielle standing in the water at Pontiac Lake Beach, he became so completely captivated by her that he walked straight off the edge of the pier face first. He literally “fell for her” Luckily, Danielle never saw the fall. But she did see him moments later when he surprised her on the beach and it couldn’t have gone better. Though they only spent a few short hours together before Hayden had to drive all the way back to Ohio, something extraordinary had already begun. A man who once guarded his heart drove across state lines just for one girl, and a girl who swore she didn’t need love suddenly found herself unable to imagine life without him. And from that magical summer day forward, their story became the easiest chapter either of them had ever written. The rest, as all the best fairytales say, is history. ♥️
