An Inherently Theatrical Tale

Why Starved Rock

On November 4, 2017, two strangers moved to Chicago. We didn't know each other quite yet -- we both heard a little bit about the other from our mutual friend Darrington Clark, but our paths didn't cross until Darrington brought us together in March 2018. After a series of what Daniella would adamantly refer to as NOT-dates (including a rejection on Mitch's birthday that she has yet to make up for), we started dating in late April 2018. By that summer, we were both feeling a bit trapped by the city we had just moved to. So, on July 7, 2018, we borrowed John Denny's car and took our first trip out of the city of Chicago together to a state park just under two hours away from Chicago. A lot has happened between then and now. We've traveled a lot more. We've seen more of the wilds of North America, and backpacked and camped in Illinois, Wisconsin, California, Kentucky, Michigan, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, and, most recently, Ontario. We've learned that Daniella will always get over 50 bug bites and Mitch will always get less than five, even when she bathes in bug spray and he doesn't put any on at all. We've lived through and are living through a pandemic, difficult health discoveries, and the ups and downs of living together. And we've continued to choose each other every day through it all. On December 18, 2020, we watched the sun rise over Lake Michigan and proposed to each other. We spent over a year searching for the place we wanted to bring together our most cherished loved ones from around the country, and kept coming up short. Finally, in February 2021, we thought about that state park we escaped to in summer 2018 and the beautiful tradition of finding wild spaces that it launched. We are thrilled to celebrate five years of love and adventure with you at the starting point of our wild adventures: Starved Rock State Park. We'll see you in the woods.
