Pelican Island

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge is a small barrier island and protected wildlife sanctuary on Florida’s Atlantic coast, best known as the first national wildlife refuge established in the United States. Surrounded by the calm waters of the Indian River Lagoon, the island provides a safe nesting habitat for brown pelicans, egrets, herons, and many other coastal bird species. Dense mangroves, seagrass beds, and untouched shoreline create an important ecosystem that supports both migratory and native wildlife. Visitors nearby can enjoy scenic observation areas, kayaking, fishing, and nature trails while experiencing one of Florida’s most historically significant conservation sites.
