Travel Note

Areas to Stay

We recommend staying in Cartagena’s Old City —close to restaurants, shops, and wedding events. Getsemani is a good touristy area full of hostels, bars, street food and best of all street art. It is also a 15 min walk to the Old Walled City; we recently stayed here! Bocagrande is right on the beach, full of hotels and is safe.

Travel Note

Booking your Flights

Book your flight to Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) in Cartagena, Colombia. There are direct flights from New York City (JFK) and other major hubs in the U.S. and Canada.

Travel Note

Arrival & Immmigration at Cartagena Airport

The airport is 10-15 minutes from the city center. U.S. citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days and can proceed directly to immigration. Canadian citizens must pay a reciprocity fee of approximately $85 CAD before going through immigration. The lines to pay this fee are not obvious and ask an airport employee for assistance in locating the correct payment and immigration lines.

Travel Note

Guest Concierge

Our wedding planner’s sister company, Two Travel offers accommodation, transportation and recommendations for day trips (e.g., beach club) in Cartagena. Feel free to reach out to Sofia (sofia@two.travel) who is well versed in our wedding details and happy to help.

Travel Note

Transportation

We recommend using Uber, as it is what locals primarily use and provides transparent pricing. DiDi is Colombia's version of Uber and offers better rates than hailing on the street. Yellow taxis require fare negotiation, and prices are dictated by the driver rather than a meter.

Travel Note

Currency & Payment

The local currency is Colombian Pesos (COP). Use Colombia's national bank ATMs for the best rates. Credit cards are widely accepted, but carrying small cash is helpful.

Safety Tips

Colombia has made significant strides in safety over the past two decades, especially in major cities and tourist destinations. However, like any country, there are areas where crime rates are higher, and precautions should be taken. Colombians are warm and welcoming, and most travelers visit without issues. Just stay aware of your surroundings, use common sense and you'll have a great time. Safety Tips: Avoid isolated areas at night. Stay in well-lit, busy streets. Use registered taxis or ride-sharing apps (Uber, DiDi) instead of hailing cabs on the street. Be cautious with valuables. Petty theft is common, especially in crowded places; don't flash your designer items. Keep them at home. Beware of scams. Avoid accepting drinks from strangers and be skeptical of people offering unsolicited help.
