For those driving up the coast stop at this gem along the way in San Luis Obispo. William Randolph Hearst started to build this estate on his ranch land overlooking the village of San Simeon in 1919. By 1947, the hilltop complex included a twin-towered main building, three guest houses, and 127 acres of terraced gardens, fountains and pools.

Across Highway 1, is Moonstone Beach where you can stroll above the surf on a bluff-top boardwalk.
