Dan awoke early on a snowy day in February 2009 to a phone call from a strange number. It was his friend Jon, who had lost his phone in the snow, and had borrowed a friend's phone to call Dan. Jon & Dan agreed to meet at 'Hawaiian night' (despite the snow) at a nightclub in Canterbury that night. Dan sent a message to Jon's 'new number' later that day to confirm, and the conversation went something like this... D: "Still out tonight?!" H: "Yes... who's this?" D: "It's Moemken. You going in fancy dress?" H: "You're who?? Yeah I'm wearing a pink tutu." D: "What?? I'm guessing this isn't Jon?" H: "No, he borrowed my phone earlier! But if you're going to Hawaiian night, look for the girl in the pink tutu!" They continued to exchange texts for the rest of the afternoon, getting to know each other. Upon arriving at the club, Dan spotted a girl in a pink tutu, standing over by the bar, and approached to say hello. "Are you Harriet?" Dan asked. Looking a bit confused, the girl stared at Dan for a second, before replying "No - I'm Sabrina! But that's my friend Harriet over there!" It was love at first sight...
After Dan had subtly dropped hints that he was in no financial position to buy a ring, and had told Harriet she should paint her nails a garishly bright colour, the couple flew off to celebrate her 29th birthday in Morocco. Over the next few days, H&D shared a hot air balloon ride at sunrise, a stay at Richard Branson's private Atlas Mountain retreat, a camel ride into a private desert camp, amongst many other engagement worthy experiences. But true to his word, Dan did not propose. They flew back to London, stopping via Harriet's parents' house to pick up Dora (their tortoise). As they arrived home, tired from the flight, Dan took his time to find his keys. Eventually, he slowly opened the apartment door to let Harriet in on his secret. 200 lit candles*, a path of rose petals, 100 photos of the pair strung across the entire apartment, and a ring on the kitchen table... *Fire safety disclaimer: Harriet's Maid of Honour Susanna and her husband Adam had a heavy involvement and were hiding down the hall keeping an eye on the candles!
