One everyday freshman night at Truett-McConnell University, I was asked by a friend to come play spike ball in Garrison lobby, one of the guy dorms. I really didn’t want to go because I figured it would be all guys, but one of my girlfriends asked me to come with her so she wasn’t alone. I walked into the lobby and sat against a wall and immediately my friend left me to speak to someone else. So there I am sitting alone against a wall surrounded by some people I know but all guys.. of course, exactly what I was afraid of. Eventually the friend who invited me came over and said, “hey can you be Daniel’s partner because he doesn’t have one and I already told him you’d be his partner...” Um, who’s Daniel? I don’t even know him and I really don’t want to play spike ball in front of a bunch of guys. What if I stink or mess up, or what if I am bad and this Daniel guy gets irritated that he got a terrible partner? That would be so embarrassing! So I said no, I’ll just watch and keep to myself until my girlfriend is ready to leave. Well, apparently that wasn’t okay with Daniel because when he found out I refused to play he decided he would come over and talk to me himself, a complete stranger. Obviously when he did I was immediately attracted to him, and any girl could’ve noticed that based on my red face, sweaty palms, and constant laughter at everything he said. The conversation he kicked up with me about my mean refusal to play with him and my fear of making a fool of myself led to the best conversation I’ve ever had with a stranger. I remember bits and pieces of what we talked about that night, but what I remember most of all is how shocked I was by how much I was drawn to him and for reasons I can’t even begin to explain. Now we are the best spike ball team ever, after our four months of the best friendship and three years of realizing we have found the only one we want to spend the rest of our lives with.
It all happened so fast! On Monday I bought the ring, on Wednesday I asked her dad, and on Friday I asked my best friend to marry me! I knew Bekah wanted it to be a surprise so I did my best. I asked my friends Garrett and Brittany to come up to Cleveland with me to take pictures for us. We picked up Bekah from Truett and went to one of our favorite places, Dick’s creek. When we picked her up Garrett told me to put the box with the ring in it, in his camera bag. We got to the waterfall and started just taking some pictures of the falls. We went down in front of the falls. Garrett and I had this plan he was going to pretend he needed a new memory card, and grab the box with the ring out of his camera bag, so that’s what I did but Brittany didn’t know the plan. I handed her an empty case and she said no that’s empty so I handed here another one. Bekah and I sat down on a rock right in front of the falls for Garrett to take pictures of us, after he took a few and Bekah got up I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me! I didn’t know how she would act but once she was able to speak she said yes! Now I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!
