Climbing a volcano in Guatemala had always been on our bucket list. It was something we’d talked about for years. So one day, we finally decided to make it happen. We trained for a few months and then flew to Guatemala with my siblings and brother-in-law to take on the challenge of Acatenango. The hike was no joke. Five hours of steep trails, light rain, and strong winds tested us from the start. But after pushing through, we made it to basecamp, surrounded by clouds and incredible views of the nearby active Fuego volcano. We spent the night bundled up, enjoying a campfire with marshmallows and watching Fuego glow red in the distance. At 4 AM the next morning, we started the final two-hour climb to the summit. It was the hardest part. It was cold, dark, exhausting, and the thin air made every step feel heavier. The only things we could see were the headlamps of fellow hikers ahead of us and the distant lights of Antigua and Guatemala City glowing far below. But the views to come made it all worth it. As we reached the top, the sun began to rise over Agua volcano, and it truly felt like we were standing on top of the world. Then Logan spotted the perfect spot. With Fuego in the background, he dropped to one knee and asked the biggest question of our lives. 🥰 Climbing Acatenango was a challenge, but we would do it all over again just to relive that moment. A moment we’ll never forget.
