Our ceremony is a handfasting, a symbolic tradition where two people join hands and are bound together with ribbons or cords to represent unity, commitment, and choice. It will be heartfelt, inclusive, and easy to follow. Handfasting is an ancient ceremonial tradition that dates back hundreds of years, with roots in Celtic, Norse, and early European cultures. The term comes from the Old English phrase meaning “to bind by the hand.” In early communities, handfasting was a recognized way for couples to declare their intention to marry. The couple’s hands were joined and bound with cords or ribbons, symbolizing trust, commitment, and the joining of two lives. In some regions, handfasting marked an engagement period, while in others it served as a full and legally recognized marriage. Today, handfasting is embraced as a meaningful, symbolic ritual. It represents love freely chosen, partnership, and the weaving together of two paths into one shared journey.
