Depending on who you ask, Daniece and Ryan met at two very different times. Ryan will say their paths first crossed during senior year of high school at a camp in 2012. According to Daniece, that memory doesn’t exist. What she remembers is meeting a quiet, soft-spoken boy from Hawaii during their freshman year of college in 2013. They ran in the same friend group and spent a lot of time together. During a group night hike, the two found themselves alone at the end of the trail, where they talked (well… she talked and he listened) about life and their dreams for the future. Somewhere in that conversation, Daniece thought to herself, “I could see myself marrying someone like him one day.” But this isn’t where the love story begins. Yet. They didn’t date in college. In fact, if you ask Ryan, he’ll say Daniece ghosted him after he tried to set up a study date in the library (she claims he wasn’t her type back then). Not long after, Daniece transferred schools, and “Ryan Kim” became just a distant memory—one she kept up with through the occasional Instagram update. At her new college, Daniece found herself surrounded by several of Ryan’s childhood friends. She eventually went to nursing school with a few of them. Those friendships would lead her to O‘ahu—seven years after she last saw Ryan—for their friends’ engagement party. And guess who was also there? Yep, you guessed it. After a few awkward “hellos,” and a little meddling from mutual friends, something that had once quietly faded came back to life. A year later, Daniece packed up her life in L.A. and made the move to Hawai’i. Now, thirteen (or fourteen) years later, depending on whose version of the story you believe, Daniece and Ryan are getting married. And the rest, as they say, is history.
