Question

HOW DO I HANDLE THE STREET VENDORS?

Answer

Barranquilla and Cartagena are full of tourists and the locals know it. You will be approached by some street vendors. It's inevitable. They'll try to sell you hats, sunglasses, tobacco, etc. At times, it can seem a bit overwhelming but all you need to do is keep walking, look straight ahead, and say "no gracias" . They'll move onto the next customer. To the extent you want to buy a souvenir, remember everything is 100% negotiable.

Question

SHOULD I DRINK THE TAP WATER?

Answer

Unless you are looking to roll the dice on future stomach ailments, we wouldn't recommend it! It's best to just stick with bottled or bagged water, which you can find in every restaurant, bar, hotel, store, etc.

Question

DO I NEED A PASSPORT OR VISA?

Answer

To enter Colombia, your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months after your travel dates. American citizens do not need a Visa to visit Colombia.

Question

DO I NEED TO COMPLETE ANY IMMIGRATION FORM

Answer

Yes! Check-MIG Colombia is a mandatory document for all travelers entering or leaving Colombia and must be completed before arriving in Colombia to be allowed to enter the country. Link: https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/public/preregistro.jsf If the main link does not work, please use Check-MIG's contingency website - https://www.migracioncolombia.gov.co/contingencia-check-mig

Question

WHAT CURRENCY IS USED IN COLOMBIA?

Answer

The Colombian Peso. Check out conversion rates! Remember that the meaning of periods and commas in numbers is reverse of that in the USA. For example, $ 10.000 or ten thousand Colombian Pesos (COP) = $2.5 Dollars While most places in Cartagena and Barranquilla accept credit cards, you will need cash for taxis (if not using Uber) and to purchase items from street vendors and mom-and-pop shops. You will also need cash if you're planning to take a day trip outside of the city. We recommend getting cash at BanColombia ATM machines throughout the city. The fees are significantly less than those at the airport and most exchange houses in the walled city.

Question

IS IT CUSTOMARY TO TIP?

Answer

It's typically (yes, pun intended) customary to tip around 10%. To make it easy, however, most bars and restaurants usually include a 10% service fee so you won't have to worry about math.

Question

DO I NEED AN ADAPTER FOR MY ELECTRONICS?

Answer

Colombia uses the same plugs and outlets as USA.

Question

IS CARTAGENA AND BARRANQUILLA SAFE?

Answer

Short answer is, yes! Like any international tourist destination, "no des papaya" - meaning don't make yourself an easy target for pickpocketing. Slightly longer answer is: 1) Avoid wearing too much jewelry or accessories 2) Avoid carrying too much cash or all your credit cards 3) Avoid speaking on your phone in the public - Be aware of your beautiful surroundings. All the simple stuff!

Question

ou will be dearly missed! If you cannot make it to the wedding, please let us know as soon as possible and RSVP "no", so that we can plan accordingly. Thank you!
