It was 8th grade at a mutual friend's birthday party at Doheny State Beach. I was helping load bikes into the back of a pickup truck and when I reached for Daley's bike, she yelled at me and said she would do it herself. She couldn't, and for an hour or so I thought she really resented me. Turns out, that was her way of flirting with boys. Throughout the night, she continued her awkward flirting by throwing candy, marshmallows, and cake in my face which drew the attention and disapproval of the parents in attendance. It was love at first sight for 13-year-old us; a night that started the long and wonderful chapter in our journey through life.
