It's convenient and economical to fly domestically in Mexico with airlines like Volaris, Aeromexico, and Viva Aerobus. Alternatively, renting a car is also an option. However, driving at night is not advised, and it's best to travel during the day and with other cars.
No, you should stay in the hotels we are recommending, as they are in the safest areas of the city. Please note that while Guadalajara centro is nice to visit during the day, it's far away from almost everything else in the city, and it's not very safe at night.
Guadalajara is Mexico's third-largest city and is best known for Tequila and its central location to all the different regions in Mexico. We recommend spending a maximum of two days exploring the city. The Centro de Guadalajara is a must-see, where you can explore old buildings, cathedrals, and a rich artistic community. If you're into shopping, be sure to visit Andares, which has a variety of stores and some of the best restaurants in the city. Our wedding planner will be scheduling a city tour for anyone interested in joining on Saturday.
Mexico City is a top destination for restaurants, culture, and entertainment and is just a 1-hour flight away. It's a big city with a lot to offer, so if you're visiting for the first time, we recommend staying a couple of days. Near Guadalajara, you can find tourist areas such as Puerto Vallarta (a 4-hour drive or a 45-minute flight away), with beautiful beaches along the way like Sayulita, ideal for surfing. It's also whale watching season. Chapala is also close by (a 1-hour drive), and it offers the biggest lake in the region, perfect for spending a few days relaxing and exploring the town. On the East Coast, the Yucatan region is easily accessible with a 3-hour flight. Destinations like Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen offer stunning beaches and a vibrant party scene. You can also head to the South-West Coast to Oaxaca, a 2-hour flight away, to immerse yourself in Mexico's rich native American culture, history, and unique cuisine. Puerto Escondido (a 4-hour flight with no direct flights available) is also in this region and offers a surf beach town close to the Oaxaca coast. If you want to travel North, we recommend visiting El Valle De Guadalupe. You'll need to fly to Tijuana and then take a cab to El Valle (a 3-hour flight in total). This is Mexico's wine country region with over 150 wineries, nestled between mountains and close to the ocean. The cuisine here is truly exquisite. You can also visit Cabo or La Paz if you're looking for pristine water surrounded by the desert.
The nearest airport is Guadalajara International Airport, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (GDL).
We understand that you may have heard safety concerns about Mexico, but not everything you hear on the news is accurate. While some areas may be more risky, we will be taking you to very safe locations. We advise you to stay at the hotels we recommend and participate in group activities. It's best to avoid wearing flashy jewelry, and as with any travel destination, please be mindful of your surroundings.
If you are coming from the US, your cellphone will have reception. However, be aware that roaming charges might apply to international travelers. Otherwise, most places offer WiFi.
Use only authorized transportation such as Uber or hotel taxis. Avoid hailing cabs on the street and traveling alone, especially at night. When traveling from or to the airport only take an airport cab. You can pay for the cab inside the airport and ask the hotel to call you one once you are ready to depart.
Mexican cuisine is delicious, but drink only bottled water as tap water is not safe. Be cautious with street food to avoid exposure to bacteria. Exercise moderation with spicy salsa, and avoid eating unwashed herbs like cilantro. If stomach issues arise, medicine is readily available in Mexico.
In Mexico, the weather is usually pleasant, but it varies on when you are in Mexico. Since the wedding is in February, it will be winter, and temperatures may range from 10°C (50°F) to 26°C (80°F). It can get chilly, especially at night, so please bring a coat as temperatures can drop as low as 7°C (45°F) at night.
The currency used in Mexico is the Mexican peso. While most places accept cards, there are still many establishments that only accept cash. We recommend exchanging some dollars/euros for pesos before your trip.
Service in Mexico is outstanding. It is customary to tip about 10-15% in restaurants, and about 10% for cab drivers and individuals who assist you.
Mexicans are known for their warm hospitality. It's customary to greet people with a handshake or a kiss on the cheek, depending on your relationship. Additionally, it's polite to address people using their titles (Señor, Señora) until invited to use their first names.
