FAQs

Question

This is indigenous land

Answer

Jasper National Park is in Treaty 6 and 8 and on the traditional lands of the Anishinabe, Aseniwuche Winewak, Dene-zaa, Nêhiyawak, Secwépemc, Stoney Nakoda, Mountain Métis and Métis. Newburyport is on the traditional land of the Pawtucket, Pennacook, and Abenaki, and the Wabanaki Confederacy. In both locations, indigenous peoples were forcibly removed and have largely never returned. We encourage you to read up on the indigenous histories of these areas and to reflect on the tragic events that preceded our use of the land.

Question

About the Jasper Wildfire of 2024

Answer

On July 22, 2024, three fires were started by lightning strikes near Jasper. By the evening of July 24, the fires had combined and made it to Jasper townsite, where almost a third of buildings were destroyed. By the time the fire was declared under control, over 300 square kilometers of forest had burned. Tragically, a firefighter lost his life on the fireline. We were heavily involved in the fire response. Cynthia spent several weeks as a wildland firefighter on the fireline and Matt worked as a Safety Officer for the incident. Luckily, our house survived the blaze thanks to the incredible efforts of the town Volunteer Fire Brigade. The town continues to heal from this trauma. Please be respectful of the residents, and don't ask them what they lost.

Question

Wildlife viewing in Jasper

Answer

We hope you get to see some of the amazing wildlife of Jasper! All wild animals can be dangerous, and we have a few suggestions to keep you and the critters safe. 1) Stay in your vehicle! This not only keeps you safe, but also reduces animal's habituation to people which can reduce conflict. It is also the law! 2) Keep more than 30m (100ft) away from elk, deer, and moose. This time of year, these animals are calving and can be agressively protective of their young. 3) Keep more than 100m (300ft) away from bears. Although they may look docile, they can react quickly and agressively without warning. 4) Carry bear spray (and know how to use it). Bear spray can be purchased at many stores in Jasper, and is recommended if you plan to hike in the backcountry. If you chose to purchase some, ask us for a lesson on how to use it, or watch an instructional video on Youtube - it can be nasty stuff if used incorrectly. 5) Keep children close and dogs on leash.

Question

Where to stay in Jasper

Answer

Accommodation can be tricky in Jasper, especially post-fire. Book early! Here are a few suggestions to get you started. In the Townsite: -There are numerous hotels available. The Lobstick Lodge and Marmot Inn both treated us well during the fire! -Air BnB is a good option. Out of Town: -Outlying commercial accomodations may be more pricy than a hotel, but they sure are nice! Pine Bungalows, Patricia Lake Bungalows, and Alpine Village are just a few. -The Jasper Park Lodge (Fairmont) is a town unto itsself, and occupies a beautiful lakeside property. If you're willing to pay the price, it's worth the stay. Camping or stay with an RV: -Whistler's campground is a nice spot just a few minutes outside of town. -Snaring Campground is our favourite local campground, but is approxomately 25 minutes from town. Hinton -Just over an hours drive from Jasper townsite is the city of Hinton. There are many more options for reasonably priced accommodation here if you're willing to make the (beautiful) commute.
