My bridesmaid Jam dragged me out to the bar (The Whisky Bar) one cold Friday night in October, 2013. Jam was out with her new friends from Law School, and I was studying for mid-terms for my first semester of my M.Eng... in sweatpants and a hoodie. After a very convincing phone call I proceeded to get ready, drive downtown and meet up with the girls. At the end of the night, while leaving the bar, one of Jam's friends bumped into a friend... who happened to be out with Curt (shout out to Steve Powell!!). Curtis started chatting with me, asked for my number, and I honestly left thinking I would never see him again. However... a few minutes later I got a text, which turned into more texts, which evolved into a few phone calls over the coming weeks. I guess you could say we hit it off and just 'clicked' right away. By the end of October we had our first date, and well, now, the rest is history...♡
It was a long time coming... nearly 6 years to be exact... and so surprising me was going to take more than a little effort. Our parents had been informed over May long weekend; he asked my father for permission for my hand. Two days before the proposal he told me we were meeting friends for dinner at Dow's Lake. I didn't think anything of it. Friday came, we arrived, parked, and began walking toward the restaurant when he got a fake phone call to say our friends were caught in traffic. Curtis asked if I wanted to go for a walk along the water since we had some time to kill - I suggested a patio beer but for some odd reason he wasn't into the idea... We walked along the water when he turned and said "I can't keep up the charade any longer." I looked at him and laughed, "You're joking." Because folks, this wasn't the first time he faked me out for fun. He said he was serious, then added in a few sweet lines, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. All I could see was the ring in that moment - it was so absolutely perfect. I kept telling him how much I loved it and forgetting to tell him how much I loved him... women, am I right? We hugged, we kissed, we laugh cried (I ugly cried), we snapped a few photos... oh, and I said YES! He then said he had a surprise planned... we drove down Preston, and he walked me into Giovanni's, where both our parents were waiting with a bottle of Champagne and flowers. It was a very special evening to remember; and some way, somehow, he managed to surprise me!
