Binghamton is known as the "Carousel Capital of the World" and has six historic carousels that are free and open to the public from Memorial Day to Labor Day. All six carousels are on the New York State Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places The carousels in Binghamton, New York are free because of the generosity of George F. Johnson, a shoe manufacturer and philanthropist who donated the carousels to the city's parks between 1919 and 1934. Johnson believed that carousels contributed to a happy life and helped children grow into strong citizens. He insisted that the municipalities never charge for the rides.
