Cocktail attire.
Cocktail attire is a semi-formal dress code that is more polished than casual wear but less formal than black-tie, typically involving a tailored suit or dress. For men, this usually means a suit, or a blazer with dress pants, while women can opt for a cocktail dress, a dressy jumpsuit, or a stylish pantsuit. Accessories are key to completing the look, and the specific style can vary based on the event's time of day and venue. For men Suit: A dark suit is a classic choice, especially for evening events. Separates: A blazer or sports coat with dress pants is also appropriate. Shirt: A dress shirt is a must. Tie: A tie is often encouraged but not always mandatory; consider your specific event. Shoes: Polished dress shoes such as Oxfords, loafers, or brogues are ideal. What to avoid: Jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers are too casual. For women Dress: A cocktail dress is a traditional choice, typically knee-length or midi. Avoid floor-length gowns unless the dress code is "black-tie optional". Jumpsuit or pantsuit: A dressy jumpsuit or tailored pantsuit is a stylish alternative. Shoes: Dressy heels or elegant flats work well. Accessories: Jewelry and other accessories are important for completing the outfit. What to avoid: Overly casual items like sneakers or flip-flops, and be cautious with white or very light colors at a wedding. General tips for all Consider the event details: The time of day, location, and season can influence your outfit. A daytime or outdoor event might allow for lighter colors and fabrics, while an evening event can be more formal and incorporate richer textures. Don't confuse with semi-formal: Cocktail attire is often considered a step above semi-formal. Focus on tailoring: Ensure your outfit fits well and looks polished. Accessorize: This is a great way to add personal flair to your look. When in doubt, ask: If you are still unsure, it's best to lean on the dressier side, or ask the host for clarification.
