Courtney and Jairo met in high school at Vanden High. They quickly became the best of friends going to football games together, swimming, long drives, and late-night-runs to Dutch Bros. After over two years of friendship, Jairo finally asked Courtney to be his girlfriend on December 23, 2014, on her 18th birthday. The following five years were a whirlwind with Courtney in college at Chico State {Go Cats}, then starting her career in "the family business" for the State of California at the Department of Corrections. All the while Jairo was in the Navy (which stands for Never Again Volunteer Yourself, if you’re curious) starting in Illinois, then Virginia, and finally being stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. In the Navy, Jairo is stationed onboard the USS Antietam as a Fire Controlman, operating and maintaining combat and weapons direction systems, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missile systems, and gunfire control systems. {HOOYAH} Jairo has had the opportunity to visit many countries during his time in the Navy including Guam, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and South Korea.
In early December of 2018, Jairo contacted Courtney's best friends in Chico and asked them for their discretion and help. He was coming home for the holidays on leave and he was planning to propose. He knew exactly where he wanted to do it. Jairo and Courtney's favorite beach in Monterey, where over their years together had become their favorite annual getaway (you see thanks to Jairo’s genius decision to choose Japan, they only saw each other annually). Their favorite vacation destination came about after watching an episode of Diners-Drive Ins-and Dives, which highlighted The Monterey Fish House. Courtney's friends quickly and flawlessly helped him collect decor, their cameras, and keep this secret from Courtney. On December 21, 2018, Jairo and Courtney woke up and headed to their favorite breakfast spot on their way to Monterey. After breakfast, they made it to their hotel and then headed to the Monterey Aquarium. Back at the hotel, they still had a few hours before dinner and Courtney was in no hurry, wanting to relax on the hotel’s rooftop patio. Jairo, on the other hand, was insistent on heading to Del Monte Beach before dinner. Courtney caved. Jairo managed to keep his composure on the drive to the spot they’ve been to so many times before. After what seemed to him like an eternity of a drive, (keep in mind it was only 5 minutes) they pulled over the car to head down to their beach. On her way down the stairs to the water, Courtney looked down and saw the candles and beautiful rose petals. Her first instinct was to look at Jairo and say "what are you about to do". It was beautiful and her friends outdid themselves and captured everything with pictures and video. The entire night was so special and a beautiful start to the next chapter of their lives.
