David and Courtney's careers both led them to El Paso, Texas in 2014. David, a New York native, took a job as a graduate assistant football coach at the University of Texas at El Paso. Courtney was making her way back to the Lone Star State after spending a year in southern Oregon where she got her start in journalism. Courtney was focused on her career and worked a lot. David also worked crazy hours and was a full time student getting his Master's degree so their paths didn't cross for some time, but that soon changed. in the spring of 2015 the pair was set up on a blind date. David's offense coordinator's wife was friends with a colleague of Courtney's and they thought the two would make the perfect pair. David had Courtney's number for about a month before he text her, but when he did they made plans to grab a drink at Hope and Anchor. That was on May 29, 2015. They walked across the street to the arcade bar after and Courtney beat David at Mortal Kombat. As they say . . . the rest is history.
Courtney thought it was just going to be a weekend filled with family visiting from out of town. It was Mother's Day weekend and David's niece Victoria was also getting her First Communion. Little did she know, David had been secretly planning the proposal for months. Back in April, David took a half day and drove to Houston one night when Courtney was working late and asked both of her parents for their blessing. On Saturday, May 12th, Courtney was told they had reservations at Caroline's Upstairs on South Congress, but they really just had to get her to South Congress for the proposal at the "I Love You So Much" mural. Family members were taking turns getting photos taken in front of the mural and of course, Courtney wanted one too. When she and David stepped in front of the mural she could feel his heart beating out of his chest. He turned to her and she knew exactly what was happening. It was the best day followed by a celebration with both families in town from New York and Houston.
