Guests Traveling to Peniche, Portugal for the First Time

Surrounded by beaches to the North, South, East, and West, Peniche is one of the western most points of Portugal located on a peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean. Historically a major fishing port in Portugal, the city become well known for its wonderful beaches, surfing, and fresh seafood. Peniche is approximately an hour drive from Lisbon, Portugal's beautiful capitol city that also claims the Country's largest international airport. Thus, for guests traveling from outside Portugal, it is recommended to fly in and out of Lisbon. While we encourage you to spend as much time in the relaxing and wonderful city of Peniche, if you intend to spend more than a few days in Portugal (and we hope you do), it's a fairly small country - approximately the size of Pennsylvania - and we have a few recommendations for the adventurous and less adventurous travelers under the Things to Do page.

Residencia Maciel

Maciel is comprised of three bed and breakfasts (residencias) located in the heart of the old town of Peniche. The bed and breakfasts are all conveniently located in a quiet square that is only two blocks from the port and main strips for bars and restaurants. Maciel is privately owned by the same couple that operate the residencias. We have blocked out all available rooms at Maciel from Thursday, July 25 - Sunday, July 28, for our guests. Sea Garden

A family owned and operated residência (bed and breakfast), Sea Garden is located near the public garden (Jardim Público) in the center of Peniche and is only a few feet from various restaurants, cafes, and stores. The residência has twenty rooms and can accommodate up to 42 guests. We have blocked out all available rooms at Sea Garden from Thursday, July 25 - Sunday, July 28, for our guests. Mercearia D'Alegria

A smaller, family owned and operated boutique bed and breakfast, Mercearia D'Alegria is a four minute walk from the beach and 10 minute walk from the heart of the downtown. This super cute bed and breakfast has seven rooms that collectively can host up to 20 guests total. Contact geral@merceariadalegria.pt and mention the Costa/Kelser wedding.

Peniche Transport

For guests traveling from outside of Portugal, Lisbon is the closest major airport to Peniche. In terms of public transportation, there is a bus that runs from downtown Lisbon to Peniche - but it will take about two hours and we wouldn't recommend it. If you rent a car, or take a private transport from the airport to Peniche, it will take approximately one hour. Most of the major car rental companies have locations at the airport - i.e., Hertz, Europcar, National. Private transfers/shuttles can be arranged from Mydaytrip.com, Suntransfers.com, Airportcitytransfer.com, or Blacklane.com. Prices vary depending on the number of travelers, but usually cost between 25€ to 40€ per passenger.

Additional Lodging Information

In addition to the blocks of rooms available at Residencia Maciel and Sea Garden, guests can access other reasonably priced residencias and private rooms at booking.com and penicherentals.net. Given the increased tourism to Peniche over the past few years, there are many available residencias and room rentals for travelers located in and around the center of Peniche. Guests can also book rooms at MH Peniche, the largest and nicest hotel in the area. The hotel is located right on the beach, outside the center of the town, and approximately five minutes by car and twenty-five minutes by foot.
