Question

How We Met

Answer

Joe: "Jen and I first met online, but that doesn't do it justice. A year into the pandemic, there was a new app called Clubhouse. It was like a cross between Twitter and a conference call; you could start audio-only chatrooms on any subject, which let you get to hear each other's personality come through. I was running some different Christian rooms when Jen stumbled upon them and became part of a group of new friends. Clubhouse didn't last long as an app, but about six months later, as I was driving back to Boston from North Carolina, I happened to see she was online and wanted to see if she was around to chat. A three hour phone call later, we accidentally discovered we didn't just have shared faith, we had chemistry. So we kept talking... and we're still talking."

Question

First Date

Answer

Jen: "He lived in Boston, and I lived in Salt Lake. When his spring semester finished up, I flew in to meet him for the first time... and picked up COVID-19 on the airplane, forcing us to isolate together for two weeks. There’s nothing quite like quarantine to get to know a person, and I knew right away he was a keeper by his gentleness and deep compassion in response to my anxiety attacks. That kindness was a very healing manifestation of God's love for me, and it has held fast over the years."

Question

The Proposal

Answer

Joe: "In the middle of a stupidly long cross-country ski through the backwoods of our Vermont town, where I was less skiing than shuffling my feet in suggestions of forwardness, we came to a pond. We know it well; it’s on land owned by some church friends, and we had just gotten our Christmas tree there a month prior. After some snacks and a little silliness on-brand for our relationship, she looked away long enough that I could fumble the ring box from the security of my snow pants zipper pocket. I can’t remember what I said, but I know I asked her to marry me. After she fell into the snow laughing, which concerned me for a second, I was delighted to hear her say yes." Jen: "The laughter was because I was genuinely speechless with surprise. We'd known that we wanted to get married, but I was under the impression that he wasn't going to formally pop the question for another 6-9 months. Even as he was getting down on one knee, all I could think was 'this poor guy clearly has no idea that this looks like a proposal right now.' But reality sank in, we were overjoyed, and not even the remaining 6 miles of gruelingly sticky snow could ruin our mood."

Question

What's Next?

Answer

We are excited to formally join forces in bearing witness to God's love and amazing grace in our lives. Joe's pastoral work will continue at East Craftsbury Presbyterian Church (where Jen is stoked that she can now finally officially be a member), and things are taking off at the start-up Jen works at. We're looking forward to playing more music together, being involved in community life, eventually getting a dog, and hopefully adding some kiddos to the household.
