We didn't know each other for most of this bit, too busy being children, but we DID grow up a few blocks away on opposite ends of Stoneleigh. Where we did meet was high school where we kept running into one another in elective classes year after year. She, the nerd with a Rubick's Cube... He, the nerd without a Rubick's Cube... Anyway we became friends and hung out sometimes.
Once we were both in universities in Boston, we started hanging out regularly. David had learned to home-brew Cider during his Freshman year like the chemical engineer he was and so we had an excuse to hang out almost every weekend. Despite heavy hinting from friends in the know, it took us about three months to do the awkward shuffle from couple-to-be to dating during spring semester 2012. Neither of us can quite remember when the switch really happened so agreed that the Friday before Boston Marathon Monday was our estimate anniversary.
"Project Co-Habitation" began in 2017 after we both graduated and our respective jobs calmed to a place where Hallie could join David in Pittsburgh. The test was thus: a 1+ year trial to see if we could get along as roommates and keep each other more or less sane. Turns out we're quite a good fit. Also we had a local feral Calico cat in our neighborhood that we took care of. Cali was the best and we will remember her forever.
Jumping on the opportunity to travel as much as possible before finding a place to plant roots, we flew across the world to set up shop at David's new company in China. We got involved in the ExPat community, learned exactly enough Mandarin to get by (which for David meant learning Mandarin and for Hallie meant learning to play Mahjong), and traveled a bunch while there. Our first trip abroad (from our home base in Shanghai) was to Tokyo, where we rotated through being in awe of Humanity, History, and Natural Beauty.... After a long day of bullet-train riding to see Mt. Fuji, we found ourselves in a brightly painted local sake bar under the railway tracks. Between rounds of Tonkatsu, David brings up that he had previously considered proposing marriage on that trip, but wanted to be sure that he did it right and so asked for a list of how and under what circumstances he should propose in the future... "You just did, you dork.... Yes."
We're back state-side now, figuring out what that means and what adventures await us next! (Obviously this whole marriage thing is on the top of the list, which is why you're here!) While 2020 has certainly meant that "adventure" hasn't included as much travel as that year in Shanghai had spoiled us with, we have introduced a new calico cat into our little family. Calliope has certainly been the highlight of a strange year! And with Seattle becoming our home base for the next couple of years we look forward to learning the city that we barely got to know before lockdown started.
