Originally a slum built on the mountainside west of central Medellin, Comuna 13 became a hotbed for rival guerrilla groups like FARC and ELN because of its strategic location, allowing them to easily take drugs out and weapons into the city. The Colombian military executed a series of raids on the neighborhood in 2002, which enabled its residents to begin taking back the neighborhood. In 2005, the Medellin city government invested heavily in an infrastructure project that transformed the neighborhood into a model for urban revitalization, adding a series of escalators and a cable car to make the area more accessible. Since then, the neighborhood's residents have filled their community with art and cultural, and are renowned for their friendliness to visitors, proud of what they have been through and what they have become. We think its a must-visit while you are in town!
Pueblito Paisa is a snapshot of what small town Colombia looks like, right in the middle of the city! It's perfect for those who don't have much time to explore town, but if you have the time we prefer heading out to a real Antioquia town just outside the city!
