Our story began with a chance encounter, high above the clouds on a daytime flight from Atlanta to Frankfurt. Connor, who was about to begin a new chapter of his life at a duty station in Germany, had settled in for the journey. Lena was returning home after visiting friends in West Virginia. As one of the last to board the plane, she found her seat, the one right next to Connor. A shared smile turned into a brief conversation about the TV show, Friends, that Lena was watching. But what was happening when we weren't talking said even more. While Connor dozed off for part of the flight, Lena found herself thinking about him, even considering ordering him some food for when he woke up. Meanwhile, Connor was discreetly texting his sister, Cassie, about the incredible girl he'd just met and brainstorming how to get her number. From the very start, we were both unknowingly focused on each other. So when they landed in Frankfurt, fueled by a little encouragement from his sister, Connor knew he had to act. He asked for Lena's number with the slightly clumsy excuse that "it would be good to know people in Germany." The truth was much simpler: from the moment they met, he knew she was special and couldn't imagine not seeing her again. Connor waited for her just past the gate, but a little twist of fate intervened—Lena had forgotten her jacket and had to go back on board. By the time she came out, their moment had passed, and their new connection was left to a single phone number. Though a few months had gone by, that connection was finally rekindled with one very important text message, which led to our first real date and the beginning of our forever.
