Connie and Hsin-Yu first met in 2012 in the elevator of Wurster Hall - the architecture building at UC Berkeley. She immediately recognized his Taiwanese accent in Mandarin and asked if he and his friends were Taiwanese. Thus began a friendship of six years, which magically became something very special in 2018 when Connie moved to New York.
Hsin-Yu was working in San Francisco when Connie updated him on her move to NYC, as they often did throughout the past six years of friendship. Only this time around, they never stopped sending each other messages after the obligatory update. Texts and photos to share their everyday lives turned into lengthy phone calls on every topic possible. They soon realized how similarly they think by finishing each other’s sentences. Something just made sense, they didn’t fully understand yet, but they decided to cherish and protect it until today.
The “long distance relationship” became their lives for the next year and a half, flying to see each other each month or two, and the journey to the airport became a very familiar one. In March 3 of 2020, Hsin-Yu made the big move to New York to be with Connie. Little did they know they were going from seeing each other once a month, to quarantining together 24/7 in a 200 square foot studio in the Upper East Side. A beer pong table was purchased to facilitate working from home for two people. (don’t worry, they’ve moved and now have a dedicated bedroom and living/working space wall and a door on it!) The two of them came up with many ideas to enjoy their quarantine time together - cocktail hours by the only window in the apartment, workout sessions with youtube videos, learning new recipes together, movie nights, and so on..
The location Hsin-Yu chose to propose to Connie is a very meaningful one. The FDR Park on Roosevelt Island - this was the first "date” that Connie brought Hsin-Yu on, on his first visit to New York since they reconnected. The beautiful tram ride overlooking the city’s skyline and the blissful walk in the park.. The place has marked new beginnings for the couple in the past, and it will now lead to a bright future with concrete foundation.
