Mallory and Conner met under strange circumstances—they connected on the dating app Hinge in late March 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mallory had not been actively dating and decided that the stay-at-home order was a good opportunity for some low-stakes conversations with new guys. When she saw Conner’s profile, she was immediately drawn to the fact that one of his pictures featured him with a guitar, and another was a picture of him as a small kid, signs that they both liked music and that he might be close with his family! Conner had been on many first dates with nice women that didn’t pan out, and he was feeling confident about meeting new people. When he first saw Mallory’s profile, he noticed that she had an “I voted” sticker and some pictures that showed her silly side, and he thought she was beautiful and seemed to have a fun personality. They began chatting and pretty quickly developed a routine of video chatting over Skype as often as they could. Because of the pandemic, these Skype dates went on for several months. Both Mallory and Conner would not necessarily say it was a good way to meet someone, but they did appreciate how well they got to know each other through conversations. Eventually, they decided they felt comfortable enough to meet in person, and Mallory drove over to the Matteson home to watch a movie and eat pizza—a very high school date. They’ve been together ever since! Conner and Mallory have a similar sense of humor and a shared love of comfort shows. Their favorite thing to do is eat dinner on the couch while watching The Chef Show on Netflix. They are constantly learning from each other, understanding how the other person thinks and communicates and how they can appreciate each other. The last four years have been full of giggles, meaningful conversations, singing, cat herding, and growing together. Both being nontraditional, Conner and Mallory decided to elope instead of proposing. They were married on May 24, 2023 at Ferndale, Michigan’s City Hall. The mayor of Ferndale officiated the wedding, and their sisters Taylor Matteson and Anna Lectka were the two witnesses. After, the group joined their families for a dinner in downtown Ferndale with lots of celebrating! They are thrilled to begin their lives this way, and are looking forward to their more traditional ceremony and reception in September 2024.
