Colton and Maggie met at their summer job lifeguarding at the Wirth Park Aquatic Center—now Wiberg Aquatic Center. They were friends for a loooooonnngggg time. They taught swim lessons together and had long conversations while watching the kiddie pool. Several years later Colton intially tried asking Maggie out and she blew him off. She was over having a crush on him and him not noticing. Eventually, Maggie gave in and went on a date with him. They ended up talking for three hours on a restaurant patio over pizza and the rest is history.
After 4 years of being together, Colton decided it was time to seal the deal. He and Maggie started to look at rings and talk about their future together. After settling on a budget they were referred to a jewelry broker in Chicago. They went and agreed on a diamond and setting. Colton, being the hopeless romantic wanted to surprise Maggie with the proposal but didn't have long to make things happen before the custom ring was made. Colton had a family friend with a house on a lake that they like to kayak on. He made a plan and a few calls. Just like that, things were in motion. He was nervous about the next part, he had to ask for the blessing from Maggie’s mother. When the big day finally arrived, Colton was rattled with nerves. He was trying to be subtle with every word he said. He had told Maggie that they were going back to Golden Lake to go kayaking. They put their boats into the water and started paddling. When they got closer to the house they both started to see a few suspicious things. A group of people holding signs, a small table on the pier and a floating blow up ring. Colton started to paddle towards the shoreline. Maggie asks if there was anything Colton wanted to say to her. He nervously responded with "Not yet." Once they got to the shore, Colton helped Maggie out of her boat and onto the shore. They walked past their smiling parents. Colton began to proclaim his love to Maggie. Once they got to the pier, there was a table waiting with a gift basket and a small little box. This is where Colton dropped down on one knee, grabbed the little box and asked her to marry him. Maggie didn't hesitate to happily accept the proposal. Colton slid the ring on her finger and the two embraced.
